First
came Love, then came Law. The way back to love, is through the Law.
When the Creator first made the Garden of Eden, and He made the
universe, he made it with His love; the world was made of God's love.
But next he made Law. The law was to protect and preserve the world of
life and order that he had made, so that the good of the world could be
sustained. And that Law was truly another form of Love, one of the
surest. So he gave Adam and Even that law, that law about the fruit at
the center of the garden. And we broke that law. So we lost that
perfect Garden, and dualistic samsara descended upon us. And so it is,
that now we must get back to Love through law. Through the law alone,
can we can return to real Love.
Many new age writers and so-called spiritual teachers say that the
highest sign of spirituality in a man is a loving nature. They think
that a spiritual man is always smiling at everybody; nodding his head,
saying: "Yes, yes. That's all right. That's good. That's fine."
And they think that this easy-going attitude represents love. And they
think that a spiritual man tolerates everything. Whatever anybody does,
he says: "That's all right. That's fine. It's all good." This is how
many modern writers try to describe the spiritual man of their dreams.
But when you really love someone, you want them to know what will
protect them from harm, and conduce to their good. You want them to
know the law. It's because a father loves his son, so much, that
he tries to instill into him an awareness of laws and discipline.
Because he knows that's the only thing that will guarantee his son
happiness. So sometimes -- and especially in a reprobate age -- the
most truly caring people, the ones who love best, are the ones
who'll tell you what you're doing wrong, and tell you about the law.
Jesus Christ had quite a temper on him when he saw people breaking the
important laws. Swami Muktananda, the great meditation master, was very
strict and didn't take much fooling around from his disciples.

The great and mysterious spiritual master Nityananda also had a good
temper, including when it came to an important disciple who he really
cared about -- Muktananda himself -- who Nityananda once chased from
his ashram with a stick. So no, spiritual men are tough birds.
Spiritual men are firm. They are severe about the important things, and
sometimes sparks fly around them.
But it's all for love. They know that through the law, men can find
their way back to love. They can find the way to experience divine love
within, the truly transcendental love of God. Which is different from
human fondness. Different from lazy tolerance. Different from the
desire to please everybody or not rock the boat. By following the law,
a man truly penetrates the spiritual realm within himself. By following
the law, a man can get back to his blissful, perfect origin within. By
observing the law of chastity, he can meditate keenly and uncover the
transcendental perceptions. He can perceive the sound of Om, the holy
sound, and merge in it. And there in Om, he can finally experience
transcendental love. And now he really understands divine love. The
incontinent man who observes no law can't do this. He won't be able to
find his way home to Divine Love. His so-called love is only people
fondness, enjoyment of crowds, the desire to please. It's often
weakness and a lack of real knowing. And it is a failure to truly love
and impart the discipline others need.
So when the true spiritual man -- the lawgiver -- practices tolerance
toward the wicked, and forebearance toward the reprobate, it means
something. It is a divine testimony. It is really divine love, and it
shakes men in their bones. Tolerance means something when the law is
truly known and a spiritual man chooses to overlook a fault. But both
with strictness and forbearance to the deserving, this one truly helps
other people. But in a dark age such as this, when humanity is so far
from law, the most spiritual man will promulgate the law and tell you
what it is. They'll be roaring lions of law. Because they know that by
going through law, man can find his way back to endless Cosmic Love. |
